How did Meraki get started?

It started with an idea… I am asked a lot about how I started Meraki, how did I go from an idea to a business, how quickly it has all happened and how brave was I to start this?

To be honest, I didn’t see it as being brave and it hasn’t happened quickly!

I saw it as I had no other choice. I wanted to be happy. I chose happiness and that is how Meraki started.

Over the next few weeks, I will share with you how I started Meraki through posts and videos on IGTV. If you are that person constantly saving memes on motivational quotes, this may just be for you.

Very quickly, for those who don’t know me, I am from Corowa. I studied Bachelor of Exercise Science and Social Science (Psychology) and then worked in Sydney, London and Melbourne, where I returned to university to study primary school teaching and then worked as a Teacher and Leader for 7 years.

However, in 2016, I knew I wanted to do more with my life. I wasn’t happy and I knew something had to change, I just wasn’t sure what. So I started a Google doc and called it ‘Meraki’. I started writing any ideas down, anything that made me happy or ideas that I was passionate about. I had this on my phone and added to it constantly. This doc continued for a year and by October 2017, I started to see a pattern. Food.

So, at the end of 2017, I announced I was taking a years leave from my permanent position as a leader at a school, to pursue a career in food. Back then, it was quite possibly the scariest thing I have ever done. I gave up a very good salary for something I had no qualifications in or an actual plan.

I am asked a lot about what made me decide to take leave and to be honest, so many factors caused it. I was burnt out and I was so unhappy. Also, a huge reason for me was Memes. Memes. I was so sick of saving every meme about living your best life and not doing anything about it. I felt like a hypocrite. I felt I didn’t have the right to complain about life if I didn’t do something about it. So, one day in October 2017, I literally walked in to my boss and told her I was taking a years leave without pay and without a formal plan. Just like that.
